Late June into early July is time for Santa Rosa plums. These plums are not quite ready to pick. The plum skin should give just a little before picking. And from here on it will be a contest between us and the birds for the pleasure of eating these plums.
There is really nothing like the experience of eating fruit (or vegetables) from your own garden. The taste of the fruit is unlike anything you’ll find in the store. Last month, we had the nectarines. This month it is the plums and peaches by month’s end. There has been a bumper crop of blueberries and a handful of blackberries from a three year old vine. Hopefully tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are in our future.

So what’s the problem with plums? Well, here’s a bowl of plums in the photo above. Pick one to eat. You’re going to want to take the softest plum with the darkest purple or plum color. You know this is going to taste great so take a good bite. Now you see the “problem.” You need just a little force to bite through the plum skin and when you do take that bite, the juicy goodness of the plum squirts out all over.
As far as “problems” go, that’s not really much of a “problem.” But, I like these plums so much that the juice squirting out was about the only problem I could think of in the moment.
