This was the scene for last night’s 7 pm kickoff with the varsity football team from host, Thurgood Marshall High School, playing the visiting Pacific High School Pirates. Unfortunately, it was a tough night for the Eagles and Pacific High ran away with the win.
But, both teams and fans got to enjoy this field at Pasadena High School, clear skies and late day temps in the 80’s. And, of course, the towering San Gabriel Mountains looming behind. That’s a great setting for high school football or just about any outdoor activity.
Keith Jackson, in announcing more than a dozen Rose Bowl games, was famous for describing the Bowl as resting “in the shadows of the broad-shouldered San Gabriel Mountains.” And, of course, at just that time the camera would pan over the reliably clear San Gabriels.
It’s not just the Rose Bowl, but the whole San Gabriel Valley that rests in the shadows of the mountains.
We have written a lot here about the San Gabriel Mountains. The mountains, once referred to as the Sierra Madre or Mother Mountains, are our most dominant scenic asset. Fortunately, there are open spaces, like those at Victory Park, that allow us to take in and enjoy the grandeur of the “broad-shouldered mountains.”
