California Stripped Racer Snake

Yesterday I was treated to this California Stripped Racer Snake. He hung out on our brick steps for a few minutes then made a U-turn and slithered back into the bushes.

It is fun to see these snakes. I don’t see them very often and, when I do, they are not still for long. As their name implies, they are quick and can dart away in a flash. Yesterday’s encounter was unusual in that the snake just stayed on the bricks for several minutes.

Not coincidentally, I see a lot of lizards on these bricks — fence lizards and alligator lizards. Lizards are a favorite food of the racer snakes.

I’ve posted before on these racer snakes here and here. Yesterday the snake hung around enough to get this short video.

Have not seen a snake in my yard (thank heavens), but I see SO many lizards on my daily walks.
