Young Buck in the Neighborhood

Turn a corner and see a deer. That’s how it happens around here. I”m walking the neighborhood, turn a corner and see an animal. We’re both surprised. if I’m quick enough, I can get a reasonably clear picture before the moment is gone.

A few years ago I surprised a group of deer watching the neighbor’s cat. Small felines are not on a deer’s menu so I’m not sure what the two parties were doing there. But, it made for a great picture that still makes me laugh.

The young buck in the photo is striking a pose just before bouncing off down the street. His antlers are in the early velvet stage. I think I saw this deer about a month ago before the velvet. Later this summer, he’ll have a full-fledged set of antlers. Meanwhile, I’ll have to watch out that he doesn’t do too much damage in the garden.
